Human Rights in Education project

Network

.

Establishment of a Network linked up with similar networks internationally, for the introduction of a human rights perspective in education at primary and secondary level.

The project followed a bottom up approach contacting teachers from the first stages of its conception and collecting data particular to Cyprus. During the first interactive visualization activities the Cypriot teachers identified their concerns on a system which is viewed as being particularly centralized and controlled, imposing activities on the students without participatory decision making on their part, not acknowledging issues of racism and family violence which are regarded as ‘taboo’’ issues and imposing an ethnocentric view, regarding the ‘others’ as ‘non-Cypriot’ and hostile. It also identified the interests and needs of the different levels of education, from kindergarten to primary and secondary, for more participatory and creative learning methodologies, more project-based interdisciplinary methods of approaching knowledge and the need to abandon intimidating practices of control and punishment.

A local Network was created at the beginning of the project, all over the island.  Kindergarten, primary and secondary school teachers, of both communities became part of it, creating links for new cooperation. At the beginning the EU consultant was coordinating the meetings, offering workshops on team building, project management and communication. Our local network was able to utilize the expertise of the European consultant and trainers, so as to establish an international network, linking our group with other in Europe.

Following this the interactive seminars on Human Rights education were planned, with the intention of involving all communities and educators to cover geographically the whole island. The European Consultant Niki Roubani, submitted proposals for the content of the seminars and the European trainers, in order to finalize the program. On the 23rd of March 2003 a two-part seminar on Networking, Group Building, Communication skills and Inter-Communal and European projects took place in Limassol; 38 teachers attended the whole programme in the Teachers seminars and 14 of them continued for the Teachers Trainers seminars that took place in Nicosia.  The seminar for teachers was 4 hours and the extensive seminar for trainers was 9 hours. Aside from the theory, the seminar included many interactive activities on tolerance and team building. This material has also been distributed to teachers via email and personal contact. Some of them are also available on the project’s website. [Program]

The seminar was very useful in providing links with other European programs and organizations. The activities on team building and tolerance that were presented by the EU trainer gave new ideas on how to make group to communicate better and understand each other. We created a partnership with the NGO sending the trainer.

The success of the project was largely due to this networking activity. We are immensely satisfied by the successful links the network has made within its local area and with other international groups. The number of teachers in the network was and is still increasing day by day (and has begun to include individuals and organizations that are not within the teaching profession). The network that has been created is a sustainable interactive group, which could give rise to further activities and projects.  The network has opened the ‘gates’ for the introduction of Human Rights in Education in Cyprus.
