CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS / 1 FEBROUARY 2006

Action 1.2 – Exchanges of Young persons and Preparatory Visit (EUROMED)

Title of Program:  History? Live it up!

Main topic

It is well know that young people prefer to approach cultural and historical elements characterizing their past through biomatic processes rather than through the visit to museums, archeological sites or libraries.

Music, theater, handicraft, painting, cooking, languages can be the means through which young people progressively come to understand their historic identity, to discover their roots, to recognize themselves as members of a society whose values and principles are being shaped by relations, influences and common historical, artistic and culture elements with neighboring countries.

In the Mediterranean region especially, traditions and culture functioned since the past as connecting elements of the countries of the basin, contributing to bring their people closer and to create on their turn, new cultural forms that have survived and evolved until today.

The polis, or city, has been since the ancient times the melting pot for excellence influencing the surrounding geographical space in which it developed. Throughout different historic periods it has been a centre for the gathering, enrichment, transformation of ideas, habits, cultural forms and traditions and for their distribution to neighboring areas. The Geek colonies, with their widespread and development, played a central role in this sense together with the cities of the Phoenicians and of the Romans.

The main aim of this project is for the participants to discover their historic and cultural identity and re-live the daily life of young people in an old city trying to discover similarities and differences that characterized the life of the various Mediterranean populations throughout a biomatic process, based on the organization of workshops on theater, music, language, ceramic, painting, athletics, and cooking

.

Music and food are without doubts some of the elements connecting until today many Mediterranean cultures and populations and it is very interesting to see that there are common music and taste features, tradition or language elements that have been transferred, exchanged -transformed or not- from country to country, from the Aegean to the coasts of Phoenicia, to the north of Africa, to Latio and the Iberic peninsula.

Identifying common elements and paths from the past in our modern societies can contribute strengthening the idea of peaceful coexistence and is fundamental to raise in young people from the different Mediterranean countries the interest to understand and accept their neighbors and to fight racism, the fear for whom is ‘different’, a widespread feature of our times. It seems that in the past we can find many open-minded models of coexistence among different cultures and this can become a biomatic example for our times.

The exchange will be preceded by a preparatory visit among the representatives of the participating organizations in order to refine in all details the program and the organizational aspects.
