The Delegation of the European Commission to Cyprus
in collaboration with the Department of Primary Education of the
Ministry of Education and Culture has prepared a set of materials in
Greek for primary schools in Cyprus on the European Union.
These materials aim to raise awareness of the
European Union in view of the entry of Cyprus to the European Union
on 1 May 2004.
In these materials, reference is made to the
history of the European Union, the various characteristics of the
current and new Member States and the need to protect the
environment, focusing on Cyprus.
The package for the schools will also include
leaflets about the European Union itself, a calendar for the year
2004 with drawings that Cypriot children made during Europe Day (9
May), a brochure from the Delegation of the European Commission to
Cyprus and a flag of the European Union.
The Minister of Education and Culture Mr Pefkios
Georgiades expressed the great appreciation that the Republic of
Cyprus fosters for the work of the Delegation of the European
Commission to Cyprus and personally the Head of Delegation Mr van
der Meer. He pointed out the importance that the wider domain of
education has to facilitate the smooth integration of the Cypriot
society in the big European family. The Ministry of Education and
Culture with the dispatch of the particular educational packages to
all primary schools initiates an awareness plan of the educational
community (teachers, pupils, parents) regarding the European Union,
with emphasis on the advantages and opportunities that the accession
of Cyprus will offer.
The Head of the Delegation of the European
Commission in Cyprus, Mr. Adriaan van der Meer, stated that "The
activities included in this package for primary schools are a source
of information for the teachers, the children and their families on
the European Union. It is a first step towards further raising
awareness about how the EU works and the characteristics of the
European family that Cyprus will join very soon".
